On Monday, January 23rd, we recognize our school members for Board Recognition Month. We had very thoughtful gifts from the district and the board members called it "Christmas in January"! They were very thrilled by the cards, posters, and candy. The board members were treated to chicken tacos from Zavalla's taco shop.
About Me:
18th year in Education. Third Year as Superintendent in Zavalla.
High School - Timpson 2001; Bachelor's Degree - SFASU 2004; Master's Degree - SFASU 2011; Doctorate - Abilene Christian 2021.
Married for 13 Years to Pam and have four daughters.
We have had a busy three years since I was named superintendent of Zavalla ISD. We have been able to be very conservative and make updates to the district ranging from new floors and paint at the junior high school and new gym. We also added new doors to the junior high classroom wing and old gym to provide viewing windows for safety. Propped door alarm sensors have also been added. The access to the bus barn has also been restricted. We also replaced door closures throughout the district and replaced broken doors on the elementary campus that needed replacing. The elementary also received a new playground is that is ADA compliant for all our students and varying needs. We were able to resurface the track, add new paint to the cafeteria. Our new PPCD program and special education students were also able to have a 2020 Dodge Caravan for their transportation this year.
We have added RFID security entrances throughout the district and updated all cameras throughout the district. We participate in the the Standard Response Protocol for security, https://iloveuguys.org and Stop the Bleed. Our school nurse will be CPR certified as well.
I attend monthly Angelina County Superintendent Meetings where each superintendent gives updates at their campus and we are able to help each other with common issues. We also hold a speaker each month. I also attend Region 7 Superintendent Monthly Meetings in Kilgore and the Mid-Winter Superintendent conference in Austin in January.
We also begin offering the OSHA30 certificate to seniors beginning in 2021 and the American Welding Society Welding Certificate in 2022. We also added a CNC Machine to the ag department in 2022.
We began the first-ever junior OAP in 2021 and brought back high school OAP in 2021 as well. Our students have been very excited to have this program.
We recently began our own PPCD program, elementary self-contained program, and are looking forward to continuing to serve our students with special needs.
We have also been able to provide extra incentives to staff for retention pay throughout the year.
In the wake of recent school tragedies we have also implemented the Guardian Plan program in 2022.
ZISD participates in UIL, Junior Achievement Programs, the Coalition, Drug Free All Stars, Angelina County Fair, various OAP/Theatre Workshops, host a basketball tournament, host local district, area, and regional track meets, Dual Credit with Angelina College, and host a variety of speakers for our students.
Our enrollment is on the incline for the first time since 2020 and we currently have 93% attendance rating.
I recently performed a Policy Review with TASB to ensure ZISD is current on policy. We also created a Board Operating Procedure Manual in accordance with TASB.ZISD BOP Manual
